#mispoon says: When obese, smoking increases the probability of diabetes by an extra 44%

According to a meta-analysis of 25 studies, published already 10 years ago in JAMA (Willi C et al, JAMA 2007;298:2654-64), the association of smoking and obesity has a devastating metabolic effect:

44% increase of the probability of developping diabetes in obese smokers compared to obese non-smokers.

This is not surprising, knowing that smoking increases the abdominal adiposity and insulinoresistance, promotes inflammation and has a toxic effect on pancreatic insulin-secreting cells.

The importance of this information must be underligned when dealing with the fear of more weight gain as an obstacle to smoking discontinuation.
